Famous NC Golf Clubs
North Carolina is home to more noted and award winning golf courses than any other state in the country! The long tradition of golf in the state began centuries ago at the hallowed grounds of Pinehurst
NC and the tradition continues today with golf clubs and courses cropping up across the state. Our
NC Golf Courses and NC Golf Resorts are regularly featured in both national and international golf and travel publications.
Some publications have even remarked that our courses rival that of the legendary classic courses at St. Andrews in Scotland. Learn more about some of our noted favorites.
Pinehurst Resort
Pinehurst Resort is the golf resort that started it all in North Carolina. In the late 1890’s, prominent Boston businessman, James Walker Tufts discovered the region and began buying up acreage for a
golf course. The first course at
Pinehurst NC was laid out in 1897 and 1898, and the first championship event,
the United North and South Amateur Championship,
was held in 1901. The most famous Pinehurst Golf Course, Pinehurst No.2,
was designed and constructed in 1907
and showcases Donald Ross’s vision for golf in the United States. For more than 50 years, Pinehurst NC Resort hosted the prestigious North and South Open which was one of the only golf competitions in the United States at the time. Later, Pinehurst Resort went on to host the first PGA Tour in 1936, the 1951 Ryder Cup, and, in 1999 and 2005, the U.S. Open. While the No.2 course at Pinehurst Resort is still the most popular, Pinehurst NC Resort now
has eight golf courses, three
hotels, a world class spa and
luxurious sports and leisure
facilities. Before it was surpassed
by Mission Hills Golf Club and complex
in China, Pinehurst NC Resort was the world’s largest golf resort according to the Guinness World Records.
Just shortly before the legendary holes at Pinehurst were laid out, Harvard educator William James came to the foot of Grandfather Mountain in the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains
in 1891 and discovered Linville NC.
Being an avid golfer and
outdoorsman, James designed a few
holes at the Linville Golf Club and
went on to found and help design the 1924 course by Donald Ross. A noted North Carolina Golf Course, the Linville Golf Club is routinely listed in the Top 10 Courses in North Carolina.
