6th Dogwood State Junior Championships
Date: 8/3 - 8/05   click here for website

The 6th Dogwood State Junior Championships for North Carolina boys and girls will be played August 3-5 at Chapel Hill Country Club.

The Carolinas Golf Association event is a 54-hole stroke play competition for boys in the 14-15 and 16-18 age divisions and the girls' division. Boys ages 11 and under will engage in 27 holes of stroke play. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low half and ties in each division except for the youngest boys' division, in which there is no cut.

New champions are assured in both the older boys' and girls' divisions, where neither 2009 winner is entered. Michael McGowan of Southern Pines, NC took the boys' title last year at Cabarrus CC in Concord, NC, while Allison Emrey of Charlotte won the girls' division.

This will be the third time Chapel Hill CC has hosted a Carolinas Golf Association major event. The club was site of the North Carolina Four-Ball Championship in 2001 and the Carolinas-Virginias Junior Boys' Team Matches in 2006.

The Chapel Hill CC course, which opened in 1967, was designed by architect Gene Hamm and renovated in 1999 by John LaFoy. It will play at 6,759 yards for the older boys, at 6,012 yards for the 12-13 year-old boys and the girls division and at 5,104 yards for the 11-and-under boys.

There were 213 entries for this year's championship, with most of them in the boys' 14-18 age divisions. A sectional qualifying event at Wildwood Greens GC in Raleigh on August 2 will further reduce the starting field.
